
Alexander Spira, M.D., Ph.D.
Biography
Dr. Alexander Spira is the director of the Virginia Cancer Specialists (VCS) Research Institute and the Phase I trial program. He earned his medical degree from New York University School of Medicine, completed an internship and residency at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, an oncology fellowship at Johns Hopkins Hospital, and holds a doctor of philosophy degree from the New York School of Arts and Sciences. His research interests include immunotherapy, personalized medicine, GI, thoracic and lung cancers, and sarcomas.
Dr. Spira serves on several key committees, including the U.S. Oncology Thoracic Oncology Committee and the U.S. Oncology Research Executive Committee and is an assistant professor of oncology at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. He has been named a Top Doctor by Northern Virginia Magazine and Washingtonian magazine and has received numerous awards, including the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Medical Scientist Training Program Fellowship and the “Castle Connolly America’s Top Doctor” award.
