Precision Medicine: A Glossary of Terms

The purpose of this glossary is to provide clarification of commonly used terms in the discussion of genetics, genetic testing, and precision medicine. The terms are provided alphabetically, with illustrations of several of the key concepts.

As genetic testing becomes increasingly common as an integral part of clinical development programs, understanding the key terms and definitions is essential for all members of research and clinical development teams.

Tricia See, ScM, CGC Senior Genetic Counselor, InformedDNA

Tricia See serves as the team leader for the cardiac and neurogenetics teams at InformedDNA. Prior to joining InformedDNA, Tricia was a genetic counselor at Children’s Hospital Boston, the University of California San Francisco Memory and Aging Center, and Children’s National Medical Center. She has been a certified and licensed genetic counselor since 2005. See received a master’s in genetic counseling from the Johns Hopkins University / National Human Genome Research Institute training program.

Daniel Kavanagh, PhD Senior Scientific Advisor, Gene Therapy, WCG

Dr. Kavanagh serves as the lead in the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) Services division, and works closely with sponsors, CROs, and institutions to establish IBC oversight of gene transfer trials. Prior to joining WCG, Dr. Kavanagh was assistant professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, assistant immunologist at the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), and a principal investigator studying infectious diseases at the Ragon Institute of MGH, MIT, and Harvard.

Dr. Kavanagh received a PhD in molecular microbiology and immunology from the Oregon Health and Science University. He completed his postdoctoral training at Harvard Medical School, Boston MA, and the Rockefeller University, New York, NY.
