IRB Board FAQs

Studies involving human subjects need to be reviewed by an ethics board, known as an Institutional Review Board (IRB), to ensure that the rights and welfare of the participants are protected and that the study complies with the federal regulations.

Our Board includes physicians, pharmacists, nurses, researchers, attorneys, teachers, ministers, photographers, business owners, and many others.  We also have Board members in many geographic locations.  We are currently seeking physicians and pharmacists with oncology expertise.

We hold multiple meetings a day.  Most of the meetings begin at 8:30 am PT/11:30 am ET, but we also have meetings that start at 10:00 am PT/1:00 pm ET.  In addition, our Canadian Panel meets on Thursdays at 8:30 am PT/11:30 am ET. Meetings are completely virtual. The length of the meeting will depend on the volume of what is being assigned to the meeting, but most meetings take between 2 and 3 hours. Generally, the meetings will have between 4 and 6 new protocols; 4-7 changes in research (also referred to as modifications, or amendments) and 5-10 continuing reviews.

WCG will release the meeting packet 2 ½ days prior to the meeting and the packets should be available by 12:00 pm PT.  Most Board members spend between 4 and 10 hours preparing for the meeting.

This depends entirely on you. We send out a survey every month to get Board member availability and will schedule accordingly.  We will only assign you to meetings on days you indicate you are available, but we may not assign you to meetings every day you are available. For Board members who say they are available every day, they generally get assigned to 4-6 meetings a month.

There is not a prohibition for Board members having a conflict of interest with the research or sponsor, but we do need to manage it.  Board members with a conflict are not allowed to participate in the final discussion and vote for any research they have a conflict with.

WCG does not pay new members in training a stipend.  Once the member is in voting status they will receive a stipend for each meeting they attend.  The stipend will be paid the following month. The current stipend for a physician starts at $750 per meeting.
